Martha Peterson served as president of Barnard College from 1967-1975. She was born and educated in Kansas, receiving her Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. There, in 1946 she was named Assistant Dean of Women. Eventually she was named Dean of Women. In 1956 she transferred to the University of Wisconsin at Madison as Dean of Women.
